Are You Familiar With Bright Line Eating?
Bright Line Eating is a term coined by Susan Peirce Thompson Phd.. Dr. Thompson educated in both Brain and Cognitive Sciences put her knowledge of how the brain works with years of trying to lose weight along with information she learned about Bright Line Rules, together and created Bright Line Eating, Happy, Thin, And Free… A Weight loss program that has helped thousands to finally lose unwanted weight…
What Dr. Thompson Taught Me About The Brain
The biggest thing (and there were many), that I learned from Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson about the Brain and food is that certain foods are treated by the brain as drugs… Specifically Sugar & Flour. When someone eats sugar or flour, and images are taken of their brains, the part of the brain that controls pleasure lights up in the same way as if the person had ingested an illegal drug.
Dr. Thompson’s studies lead her to understand that for someone with a food addiction, eating sugar or flour is the worse thing that they can do… Eating sugar and flour can cause a food addicted person to binge eat uncontrollably… The more that they eat the more that they want to eat…
Am I A Food Addict?
Not everyone with a weight problem is a food addict, and not all food addicts have the same level of addiction… On Dr. Thompson’s website, you can take a Susceptibility Quiz to find out your level of food addiction… When I took the quiz I got a 7, Dr. Thompson says she is a 10, the higher the number the worse your addiction is.
First, I have to say that I hate self-directed tests, I always fear that I will skew the results by choosing the answers based on the results that I want to get. Secondly, I could never believe that my desire to eat was anything but normal, it has been my understanding that most people do not eat enough, enough of the right foods and enough food in general.
For many years, I struggled off and on trying to implement a self-feeding program for weight loss, only to have it work, then go off plan and yo-yo back up… So this idea of being addicted to food was not one I really wanted to accept. But because I believed in the science Dr. Susan Thompson was sharing, and I already knew that sugar was a non-food and flour was known to cause gluten and autoimmune related problems, I took to heart what she said. I quit sugar and flour…
I Quit Sugar And Flour
At the time when I learned about Sugar & Flour I had recently been diagnosed with Diabetes, my numbers were not very high but high enough to be diagnosed. Because of my diagnosis, I was already on a journey to lower my blood sugar. So removing foods that contained sugar & flour was an easy task, I was already geared up for the change. For months I worked to incorporate foods that were free of sugar and flour, I did that by eating more real whole foods…
I went so far as to learn to make my own mayonnaise, did you know that regular mayonnaise has sugar as an ingredient? It’s not at the top of the list, but it is there, ketchup too. I found that many of the convenient, store-bought sauces, spreads and dressings were made with added sugar and/or corn syrup, both of which I was trying to avoid… To make it easier I splurged and bought myself an Iron Clad immersion blender that made creating my own sauces, spreads, and dressings a no brainer.
In the near future, it is my plan to share with you how easy it is to make your own sauces, spreads, and dressings, keep your eyes open for those posts coming soon.
What I Learned About Eating Sugar & Flour
I can never eat sugar & flour again, how do I know? I started eating them after months of not having any. You wanna guess what happened? I’m addicted to Sugar & Flour, I know because once I began eating them again, I felt driven to get more, and more… I could not stop thinking about having more… It is a good thing that I’m only a 7 on the susceptibility scale, I can’t image ever being able to quit if the cravings were any stronger…
And sad but true, I am still fighting the cravings because I gave up trying to ignore them… And was eating all I wanted, when I wanted, and I am still trying to get it under control… After months being so good, and now several months of being so bad I am finding it hard to get myself back into the program… My brain is fighting me, at every meal, fast food is just 6 miles away… 6 miles… under 10 minutes…
I Learned Something Else
I learned that food from a restaurant or fast food place is more addicting than food I make at home, this is probably a given, but sometimes I just don’t want to see it… Now I know for certain that eating for convenience is going to be the end of me… After getting a taste of that food, I can barely stay away… Whatever they are putting into the food it is addicting… I know lots of the foods are made with sugar & flour, but processed foods also have preservatives, conditioners, and other chemicals to make it more appealing, and last a long time.
What Are Bright Line Rules
Bright Line Rules – “The bright line rule exists to bring clarity to a law or regulation that could be read in two (or more) ways. Often a bright line is established when the need for a simple decision outweighs the need to weigh both sides of a particular issue.” (1)
Bright Line Rules originate from the field of law, and can be applied to every aspect of life, except one eating because we all have to eat, at least that is what was thought, until Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson put it together, yes you have to eat, but you don’t have to eat ice cream, candy bars or potato chips. Bright Lines could be applied to eating, No Sugar No Flour No Snacking ever.
Bright Line Rules
Bright Line Rules remove the need for mental debate or willpower because you have already made the decision before the issue comes up. In the case of food, you have to take it a little farther with preparation, because we all have to eat and hunger can throw all sanity out the window,,, Planning meals in advance, and making sure we have the enough of the foods we need ready for each meal before we need them will make keeping our Bright Line Rules possible.
Ever try to figure out what you are having for dinner when you are famished? What kind of choices do you make? Let me get really hungry and not have something ready to eat, and I am on my way to take care of my cravings.
Bright Line Rules work, when I was in my 20’s I quit smoking, at the time I didn’t know it but I set a bright line rule, to never smoke another cigarette again, not even one… And I was motivated to keep it… I quit and never went back…. So I know Bright Line Rules do work when we keep them…
Keeping Bright Line Rules
Just like any habit that you practice, practice makes perfect… At first, a new habit takes extra work, but when you have been doing it for a while it becomes second nature almost automatic. It’s no different when starting to keep a new bright line rule. But let me digress, I tend to have the opposite problem I am good at starting new habits, and will do good for awhile then something happens and I get tired or bored and all my good work goes down the drain so to speak…
If I remember right, before I quit smoking I used to have the same problem I would quit, I would tell everyone, it would last for a few days or weeks then the cravings kick in and back I would go… Until that day I made myself ignore that first craving to get a cigarette, then the next and before long I had gone years… It has been more than 30 years now.
I Had Strong Motivation
When I quit smoking I had a strong motivation, I wanted to become one of Gods people, and I knew that I couldn’t be one of his if were a smoker. Because I was so miserable in my life without him that I had no other choice except to keep my bright line no smoking rule…
But for some reason, I can’t seem to keep that strong motivation when it comes to losing weight and being healthy… I guess that I don’t love myself enough, to practice good self-care… I did really good when I was first diagnosed with diabetes, and I was seeing a dietician. I lost a total of 37 pounds, not 100 like I wanted but I was making progress.
My Motivation For Losing Weight & Getting Healthy
At first, when I learned that I was Diabetic, it shook me up enough to give me the kick in the behind I needed to get going… That along with the fact that I was feeling very unhealthy. Not only was I fat, tired and miserable, I was having pain every night when I laid down, it was hard to go to sleep with my body hurting… I had already developed a type of neuropathy in my feet even before I was given an official diagnosis of diabetes,,, even now my feet always feel swollen but they aren’t, they are kind of numb all the time but often get shooting pains… I was/am just a mess…
As I started to change my diet and begin moving I started to feel better. After 8 or 9 months my blood test came back normal. Through my new diet and exercise, I reversed my diabetes without drugs, using simple lifestyle changes only… Guess what I did the day I had my blood drawn at the lab, even before I got the results? After I got my blood drawn, I went out to an all you can eat, restaurant and ate everything I wanted without regard to my bright lines… And it has been downhill ever since…
Time To Regroup & Regain Motivation
I have to say that I have not had a blood test since learning that my numbers were in the normal range. To be honest, I haven’t wanted to know what I have been doing to myself… I keep getting notices from my doctor that they want to do a new blood sugar test… They want them every 3 months… So it has been more than three months since going off my Bright Line Eating plan… It’s really time to get back on the wagon… My hope is that writing about my Eat Real Whole Food Bring Lines will help me get going again… and not only myself but anyone who reads my blog…
We Really Are Worth It
There is only one you and only one me right? We are all unique each one of us possesses our own special talents and abilities… We have friends and family that need and love us. Even if we don’t God loves us, maybe it’s time that we started loving ourselves too… I know I want to… I want to be full of energy and have the ability to do the things that will make me happy to be alive…
I want to start walking every day again when I was walking it gave me the energy that made me want to do other things… I love the stepper machine at the gym… I even felt the urge to run, run like the wind I want that back… I love water, I love swimming, I love skating, I would love to have the energy to play with my Grandchildren.
We Must Feed Ourselves
To have the energy we need to use our bodies, we have to put fuel in the engine… Without enough of the proper foods, our bodies cannot do what they are designed to do… We must learn to feed ourselves with food meant for God’s human family… Real Whole Foods, not processed denatured foods.
For many of us including myself, that means setting Bright Line Rules for Eating and keeping them. The three most important are No Sugar No Flour No Snacking… There could be others we may want to implement but these three are the most important and are a good place to start… A good 4th rule might be, No Eating Out… At least for me…
